Comfort and Strength

Honoring Women’s History Month: Mental Health and Self-Care for Women

March is Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of women throughout history. But while we recognize women’s contributions to the world, we also need to recognize something just as important: women’s mental health.

Women often feel pressure to be everything for everyone—caregivers, career professionals, partners, mothers, friends. Many women put their own needs last, believing they must keep going, no matter how exhausted or overwhelmed they feel. But the truth is, mental health is not a luxury, it’s a necessity.
If you’ve ever felt stretched too thin, like you’re carrying more than you should, or that your needs always come second, you are not alone.

The Unique Mental Health Challenges Women Face

Women experience mental health struggles differently than men, often due to societal pressures and expectations. Some common challenges include:

  • Anxiety and Overwhelm – Trying to juggle work, family, relationships, and personal goals can lead to chronic stress.
  • People-Pleasing and Difficulty Saying No – Many women are taught to be caretakers, making it hard to set boundaries without feeling guilty.
  • Burnout and Emotional Exhaustion – The weight of emotional labor—managing household tasks, supporting loved ones, and balancing multiple roles—can lead to deep exhaustion.
  • Depression and Self-Doubt – Constant pressure to “do it all” can lead to feelings of failure, guilt, or sadness when expectations feel impossible to meet.
  • Trauma and Healing – Women are more likely to experience trauma, including abuse, discrimination, or societal pressures that impact self-worth and confidence.

If any of this resonates with you, your feelings are valid. Your struggles are real. And you deserve support.

How Women Can Prioritize Their Mental Health

1. Give Yourself Permission to Rest

Rest is not lazy. Rest is not selfish. Rest is necessary. Take breaks when you need them—without guilt.

2. Set Boundaries and Protect Your Energy

You don’t have to say “yes” to everything. It’s okay to say no without explaining. Your time and energy matter.

3. Ask for Help—You Don’t Have to Do It All Alone

Whether it’s asking a friend for support, delegating tasks, or seeking therapy, you are allowed to receive help.

4. Speak to Yourself with Kindness

Would you ever talk to a friend the way you talk to yourself? Challenge negative self-talk and replace it with compassion.

5. Surround Yourself with People Who Lift You Up

You deserve relationships that support and respect you. Let go of those that drain your energy or make you feel small.

6. Seek Professional Support When You Need It

Therapy isn’t just for when things are falling apart. It’s a space to process emotions, build confidence, and strengthen mental well being.

You Deserve the Same Love You Give to Others

This Women’s History Month, let’s not just celebrate women’s achievements, let’s celebrate women’s well-being. You deserve rest. You deserve peace. You deserve support.
