When your child is having a hard time, you feel it too. It can be very painful to watch your child struggle. Maybe they are sad, angry, or quiet. Sometimes, they act out or have big meltdowns, and you feel lost and worried.
You may feel tired, scared, and even a bit angry. At times, you might think you are not doing enough. These feelings are normal. When our children hurt, our hearts hurt, too. You are not alone in this, and it is not your fault.

How You Might Be Feeling
It is okay to feel many things at once. You might feel:
- Helpless: Not sure how to help or stop the hurt.
- Guilty: Worrying that you did something wrong.
- Angry: About the situation or the challenges, you face.
- Scared: Wondering if things will ever get better.
- Overwhelmed: Trying to handle many feelings at once.
All these feelings can mix, making your days hard.
Small Steps to Take Back Control
Taking care of yourself is a big help to your child. When you feel strong, you can help your child better. Here are some simple ways to feel a bit better every day:
1. Breathe and Pause
When emotions are high, try to take a deep breath before you react. Count slowly: breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 4, and breathe out for 4. This little pause can help both you and your child feel calmer.
2. Talk About Your Feelings
Finding someone to share your feelings with can lighten the load. Talk to a friend, partner, or even a counselor. You might say, “I am feeling very tired and sad today.” Sharing helps you feel seen and can bring comfort

3. Keep Your Day Simple
On days when life feels heavy, try to make your routine as simple as possible. Don’t worry about perfect meals or a spotless house. Instead, spend a little time sitting with your child, listening to them, or simply being near them. Sometimes, a quiet cuddle or a shared smile is enough.
4. Set Kind Boundaries
It is okay to set limits for both you and your child. Clear rules can make everyone feel safe. For example, you might say, “I know you are upset. I am here for you, but yelling is not okay.” This helps your child learn to manage their feelings, while also taking care of your own energy.
5. Ask for Help
Remember, getting help is a sign of strength, not weakness. It can be very useful to talk with a therapist who understands families. At Let’sTalk! Counseling, our caring team has helped many parents and children work through tough times. A therapist can offer new ideas and tools to handle these hard days.

A Few Words to Remember

You do not have to do everything perfectly. Your presence, your care, and your willingness to ask for help are brave and important. Some days may feel very heavy. Other days might bring a small smile or a moment of peace. Both are okay.
