The school year is almost over and for many kids, that’s exciting. No more homework, early mornings, or packed lunches. But for some families, this change brings more stress than joy.
Maybe your child starts acting out more. Maybe they’re anxious, moody, or having more meltdowns than usual.
You’re trying to keep things calm, but it feels like things are getting harder instead of easier. If this sounds like your house, you’re not alone.

Why This Change Is So Hard
Even good changes can feel scary to kids. School gives them structure. They know what to expect, what time to wake up, where to go, and what comes next. When school ends, all that routine disappears. Without structure, kids may feel:
- Anxiety about the unknown
- Bored, but also overwhelmed
- Upset over missing friends or teachers
- Worried about being home all day
- Extra sensitive or emotional
And when kids feel unsettled, it often shows up as big emotions tears, yelling, not listening, or shutting down.
What You Might Be Feeling
As a parent, this change can feel like too much. You may feel:
- Tired from the school-year grind
- Worried about how to fill summer days
- Guilty for not having a “perfect” summer planned
- Frustrated when your child isn’t happy, even with time off
- Pulled in a million directions, work, home, family needs
It’s okay to feel all of this. Change is hard for you, too.
How to Make the Transition Easier
You don’t need to plan a magical summer. You just need to create a bit of calm. These small steps can help
your child (and you) feel more grounded as summer begins.
1. Keep a Simple Routine
Even without school, kids still need structure. Try setting up a basic summer routine with wake-up time, meals,
rest time, play, and bedtime. It doesn’t have to be strict but having a rhythm helps kids feel safe and settled.
Tip: Make a visual chart with pictures or words so your child can see what’s coming next.

2. Give a Heads Up About Changes
Let your child know what the plan is for the day or week. Surprises (even fun ones) can make some kids anxious. Talk through what will happen and when.
Example: “Tomorrow we’re staying home. After breakfast, we’ll play outside, then have lunch, then quiet
time.”
3. Create a “Summer Bucket” of Activities
Have a simple list or jar of go-to ideas for those “I’m bored!” moments. Include both fun and calm things:
- Water play
- Building a fort
- Drawing or crafts
- A walk or bike ride
- Watching a movie together
You don’t need to entertain all day. Just having choices can help your child feel more in control.
4. Expect Some Big Feelings
Even with planning, your child may still have rough days. That’s okay. Change brings out emotions. Try to stay calm and remind yourself: this isn’t about you doing something wrong, this is your child working through big feelings.
What helps:
- Stay close and listen
- Offer hugs or space, depending on what they need
- Use calm, clear words like: “I see you’re upset. I’m here.”
5. Take Care of You, Too
This transition is hard on parents. You may be juggling work, managing the home, and trying to keep peace. Give yourself grace. You don’t need to do it all.
Take short breaks when you can. Call a friend. Step outside for a few deep breaths. And if the stress feels like too much, ask for help. Therapy isn’t just for kids, it can help parents feel more supported and calmer, too.

You’re Doing Enough
You don’t need to have a perfect summer planned. You just need to be present, do your best, and love your
child through the ups and downs. Transitions are messy but with a little structure, some flexibility, and lots of grace, you and your child can move through it together.
