How BCBS coverage usually works here
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas is the state's largest health insurer, and BCBS members make up a big share of the families we see. Most arrive with PPO plans (often through work) or HMO plans bought on the marketplace.
PPO plans usually let you see a licensed therapist without a referral — you just pay your copay or coinsurance once any deductible is met. HMO plans can work a little differently, so it's worth one quick call to the number on your card.
Federal parity rules require plans to cover mental health visits on the same footing as medical care — so if your BCBS plan covers doctor visits, it almost certainly covers therapy too.
What decides your cost per session
Copay: a flat amount per visit (common on many plans once therapy is covered).
Coinsurance: a percentage of the session rate instead of a flat fee.
Deductible: some plans have you pay the contracted rate yourself until you hit a yearly amount — then the copay or coinsurance kicks in.
Your plan sets these numbers — the five questions below pin them down in one phone call.
How to check your BCBS coverage
Grab your insurance card
You'll want your member ID and the Member Services phone number on the back of the card (or log in to your member portal).
Ask these five questions
- Does my plan cover outpatient mental health (therapy) visits?
- What's my copay or coinsurance per session?
- Do I have a deductible to meet first — and how much is left this year?
- Are telehealth (video) sessions covered the same as in-person?
- Do I need a referral or pre-authorization to start therapy?

Therapy services families use their BCBS benefits for
Health plans generally cover therapy that treats a diagnosed concern — things like anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD-related struggles, or grief. Every plan is different, but these are the services our clients most often use benefits toward:
An honest note about couples counseling
Insurance plans — BCBS included — typically cover therapy tied to a diagnosed condition. Couples counseling on its own often doesn't qualify, though every plan is different.
If yours doesn't cover it, our self-pay rates and superbills keep it within reach — and our couples intensives are a popular self-pay option. Call and we'll help you sort it out.
Superbills: keep your benefits even out-of-network
If your plan or your therapist ends up out-of-network, you don't lose your benefits. We provide a superbill — a detailed, itemized receipt of your sessions — that you submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
Reimbursement depends on your specific policy (that's one of the five questions worth asking your insurer: “What are my out-of-network mental health benefits?”). Many PPO plans reimburse a meaningful share of each session after an out-of-network deductible.
We'll walk you through exactly how payment and billing work before your first session — no surprises.
Prefer not to use insurance — or don't have it?
Our self-pay sessions are available at a range of rates — call (972) 885-1222 and we'll find one that fits. We're committed to making sure cost isn't the reason you don't get support.
Your right to a “Good Faith Estimate”
Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don't have insurance, or who are not using insurance, an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services, including related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.
Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
Questions we hear a lot
Do you take Blue Cross Blue Shield?
Yes — BCBS is one of the major plans we accept at our Carrollton office and for virtual sessions across Texas. Coverage details vary plan to plan, so call us at (972) 885-1222 and we'll help you make sense of yours.
What will a session cost me with BCBS?
It depends on your plan's copay, coinsurance, and deductible. Many BCBS members pay a flat copay per session once therapy is covered; high-deductible plans pay the session rate until the deductible is met. The five questions above get you the exact numbers in one call to Member Services.
Does BCBS cover online therapy?
Telehealth is broadly covered on most BCBS of Texas plans, often at the same cost as in-person visits. Confirm it for your plan, then choose whichever works for your schedule — we offer both, including evenings.
What if my plan or therapist is out-of-network?
You still have options: we provide a superbill (a detailed session receipt) you can submit to BCBS for possible out-of-network reimbursement, and our self-pay sessions are available at a range of rates — call and we'll find one that fits.
Does BCBS cover couples counseling?
Like most insurers, BCBS typically covers therapy tied to a diagnosed condition; couples counseling on its own often isn't covered. Plenty of couples use our self-pay rates or superbills instead — ask us and we'll walk you through it.
