Using your UnitedHealthcare & Optum benefits for therapy in Carrollton
UnitedHealthcare members: your therapy benefits are managed by Optum — that's why you see both names. Here's how to use them with a Carrollton therapist.
- Most major insurance accepted
- Same-week openings
- Evening & virtual appointments
- Free parking at our Carrollton office
How UnitedHealthcare coverage usually works here
If you have UnitedHealthcare, your mental-health benefits are administered by Optum Behavioral Health — which is why we list both names, and why your therapy benefits sometimes don't show up where you expect in the medical portal.
The fastest checks: log in at liveandworkwell.com (Optum's member site) with your UHC credentials, or call the Member Services number on your card and ask specifically about outpatient mental health visits.
From there it works like any plan: a copay or coinsurance per session, sometimes after a deductible. Telehealth is covered on most UHC plans, and we offer video sessions across Texas.
What decides your cost per session
Copay: a flat amount per visit (common on many plans once therapy is covered).
Coinsurance: a percentage of the session rate instead of a flat fee.
Deductible: some plans have you pay the contracted rate yourself until you hit a yearly amount — then the copay or coinsurance kicks in.
Your plan sets these numbers — the five questions below pin them down in one phone call.
How to check your UnitedHealthcare coverage
Grab your insurance card
You'll want your member ID and the Member Services phone number on the back of the card (or log in to your member portal).
Ask these five questions
- Does my plan cover outpatient mental health (therapy) visits?
- What's my copay or coinsurance per session?
- Do I have a deductible to meet first — and how much is left this year?
- Are telehealth (video) sessions covered the same as in-person?
- Do I need a referral or pre-authorization to start therapy?

Therapy services families use their UnitedHealthcare benefits for
Health plans generally cover therapy that treats a diagnosed concern — things like anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD-related struggles, or grief. Every plan is different, but these are the services our clients most often use benefits toward:
An honest note about couples counseling
Insurance plans — UnitedHealthcare included — typically cover therapy tied to a diagnosed condition. Couples counseling on its own often doesn't qualify, though every plan is different.
If yours doesn't cover it, our self-pay rates and superbills keep it within reach — and our couples intensives are a popular self-pay option. Call and we'll help you sort it out.
Superbills: keep your benefits even out-of-network
If your plan or your therapist ends up out-of-network, you don't lose your benefits. We provide a superbill — a detailed, itemized receipt of your sessions — that you submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
Reimbursement depends on your specific policy (that's one of the five questions worth asking your insurer: “What are my out-of-network mental health benefits?”). Many PPO plans reimburse a meaningful share of each session after an out-of-network deductible.
We'll walk you through exactly how payment and billing work before your first session — no surprises.
Prefer not to use insurance — or don't have it?
Our self-pay sessions are available at a range of rates — call (972) 885-1222 and we'll find one that fits. We're committed to making sure cost isn't the reason you don't get support.
Your right to a “Good Faith Estimate”
Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don't have insurance, or who are not using insurance, an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services, including related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.
Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
Questions we hear a lot
Do you take UnitedHealthcare? What about Optum?
Yes to both — they're two names for the same benefits: Optum administers mental-health coverage for UnitedHealthcare members. We accept it in person in Carrollton and by video across Texas. Call (972) 885-1222 and we'll help.
Where do I find my UHC therapy benefits?
Optum's member site, liveandworkwell.com, is the direct route (log in with your UHC info), or call the number on your card and ask about outpatient mental health visits. Your regular medical portal sometimes hides these details.
What will a session cost me with UnitedHealthcare?
Your plan's copay, coinsurance, and deductible decide that. Many UHC members pay a flat copay per session once coverage applies. The five questions above will get you exact numbers in one call.
Does UnitedHealthcare cover online therapy?
Most UHC plans cover telehealth therapy, often at the same cost as in-person visits. Confirm for your plan — then pick whichever fits your life; we offer both, including evenings.
Does UHC cover couples counseling?
Like most insurers, UHC/Optum typically covers therapy for a diagnosed condition; couples counseling alone often isn't covered. Our self-pay rates and superbills keep it within reach — ask us.
