Normal adjustment, or something more?
Almost every kid wobbles the first week or two. It's worth paying closer attention when the wobble gets worse instead of better — or shows up in their body, their sleep, or their friendships.
Little kids
- Drop-off battles that escalate past the second week
- Stomachaches or headaches with no medical cause
- Sleep trouble, nightmares, or regressions that came back
- Holding it together all day, then melting down at home
Tweens
- “I feel sick” almost every school morning
- Eating lunch alone, dropped friendships, group-chat drama
- Homework refusal or grades sliding fast
- New irritability that wasn't there last spring
Teens
- Skipped classes, or flat refusal to go
- Panic around tests, presentations, or the parking lot
- Quitting activities they used to love
- “Too tired” all the time, or perfectionism in overdrive
A useful rule of thumb: two weeks of rough mornings is usually adjustment. Four or more weeks, physical symptoms, or outright refusal — that's when getting help early makes the biggest difference.
When it's more than “I don't want to go”
School refusal isn't defiance — it's usually anxiety wearing a stubborn mask. And it snowballs: every day at home makes walking back through those doors feel bigger. That's why we move quickly with these families — a plan for parents, real coping tools for your child, and small steps back that don't feel impossible. If this is your house right now, don't wait it out. Reach out this week.
The right kind of therapy for their age
A 6-year-old and a 16-year-old don't need the same thing. We match your child to a therapist — and an approach — that fits.
Play Therapy
Younger kids don't talk through worry — they play through it. A trained play therapist helps them work out what school feels like in the language they actually speak.
Play therapy →Children's Therapy
For school-age kids: naming big feelings, calming the body before the bus, and building brave-kid skills one small win at a time.
Children's therapy →Teen Therapy
CBT-based help for the academic pressure, social anxiety, and identity stuff that makes high school heavy — with a therapist teens don't roll their eyes at.
Teen therapy →College & Young Adult
First semester away, transfer stress, or a launch that stalled — support for young adults (in person or virtual, wherever in Texas they are).
Young adult therapy →EMDR
When school fear traces back to something that happened — a bad year, bullying, a scary event — EMDR helps the nervous system file it away for good.
EMDR therapy →Parenting Support
Coaching for the adults doing morning duty — scripts for hard conversations, consistency plans, and backup when you're out of ideas.
Parenting support →From first call to calmer mornings

Call or send a message. We'll listen to what's going on, answer insurance questions, and find a time that works — same-week openings, evenings included.
Get matched
Your child is paired with a therapist who works with their age and what they're facing — not just whoever has an opening.
Get a plan
The first sessions focus on what's actually driving the anxiety — and give you and your child concrete tools for mornings, school days, and setbacks.
Most DFW districts head back in mid-August. Starting early in the semester — before hard mornings harden into a pattern — makes every step easier.
Using insurance for your child's therapy
Children's and teen sessions are typically eligible under the major plans we accept — and if we're outside your plan's network, superbills make reimbursement simple. See how your plan works:
Questions parents ask us every August
How do I know if it's normal adjustment or real anxiety?
Watch the direction and the body. Normal jitters fade as routines settle — usually within a couple of weeks. Anxiety gets louder: more physical complaints, more avoidance, more dread on Sunday nights. If it's been a month, if their body is involved, or if your gut says something's off, it's worth a conversation. There's no downside to asking early.
What is school refusal — and is it the same as skipping?
No. Skipping is usually about where a kid would rather be; school refusal is about fear — a child who genuinely cannot make themselves go, often with real physical distress. It responds well to therapy, and it responds best when you act quickly, because avoidance feeds on itself.
What ages do you see?
Young children through teens and college-age young adults. Younger kids typically work with a play therapist; older kids and teens work in talk-based approaches like CBT, with EMDR available when anxiety connects to a specific experience.
Will insurance cover my child's therapy?
Children's and teen therapy sessions are typically eligible under the major plans we accept — Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare/Optum. Every plan is different, so we'll help you verify your benefits before the first visit, and our rates & insurance page explains self-pay options and superbills.
Can my teen do virtual sessions?
Yes — we offer telehealth across Texas, and plenty of teens actually open up more from their own room. In-person sessions happen at our Carrollton office. Many families mix both around school and activity schedules.
Do parents join the sessions?
It depends on age. With younger children, parents are part of the process — you'll get tools too, not just updates. With teens, we balance their privacy with keeping you meaningfully in the loop. Your child's therapist will walk you through exactly how that works at the first visit.
How fast can we get in?
We typically have same-week openings, including evening and virtual times. If mornings are already rough, don't wait for the six-week slump — reach out now and let's get ahead of it.
Let's make this school year easier
One rough week doesn't need a therapist. But if the hard mornings are stacking up, let's get ahead of it — we'll match your child with the right therapist and give your whole house real tools, fast.
